What is an M4V video file?

M4V is Apple's QuickTime container. iPhones, iPads and Macs record video into M4V by default. The format supports H.264, HEVC, ProRes, multiple audio tracks, captions and chapter markers. M4V keeps chapter markers, artwork and subtitle tracks in the shape the Apple TV app expects, which plain MP4 often loses.
Is an M4V file the same thing as an MP4 underneath?

Structurally they are close relatives. M4V is built from the same ISO Base Media File Format box layout MP4 uses — a tree of atoms holding the media data plus an index that says where each frame starts. That is why converting between them is usually a rewrap rather than a re-encode: the streams are copied across untouched and only the wrapper is rewritten, which takes seconds even on a feature-length file. M4V is Apple’s variant of MP4, used by iTunes and the Apple TV app for films and TV episodes.
Why do purchases arrive as M4V?

Because the format is the store's own delivery wrapper, tied to its apps and, for paid content, to your account. That is what makes it convenient inside that ecosystem and awkward outside it. Files that are not account-locked convert normally; protected ones cannot be opened by any converter, which is a deliberate property of the format rather than a limitation here.
Is M4V the same format as its other extension?

Yes. This extension and the longer or shorter name you see alongside it describe one underlying format, and anything that reads either reads both. The two names are historical: an eight-character filename limit from the DOS era, a vendor naming its application rather than its file format, or two programs that simply defaulted differently. Why will my browser not play an M4V file?

Browsers ship decoders for a deliberately short list of formats, and M4V is not on it — the licensing, the codec variety it permits, or simply its age keeps it out. The file is not broken and a desktop player will open it, but nothing you do to the page will make a browser render it. Converting to a web-native container is the only reliable route to inline playback. DRM-protected M4V purchases cannot be converted by anything; only unprotected M4V files are convertible, and non-Apple players often need the extension renamed.
Will M4V play on a phone or TV without flattening the battery?

Usually yes, because the chips in phones, tablets and televisions decode this kind of payload in dedicated silicon rather than on the main processor. That is the difference between a video that plays cool for two hours and one that heats the device and drains it in forty minutes. Where the format falls down is app support rather than decoding — the codec is fine, the wrapper is what a gallery app may refuse. Structurally an M4V is an MP4 — H.264 or HEVC with AAC — with optional Apple FairPlay DRM and iTunes chapter metadata.
Is M4V being phased out?

It is not going away abruptly, but its share of new files keeps shrinking and fewer new tools bother to support it. Existing files stay readable for a long time yet. The practical position is that keeping an archive in this format is fine, while starting a new workflow in it means accepting an increasingly narrow set of software.
Are subtitles inside an M4V selectable, or burned into the picture?

M4V carries subtitles as their own stream alongside the video, so the viewer can switch languages, turn them off, or restyle them in a player that supports it. Burned-in subtitles are also possible — they are just pixels in the frame — but they are permanent, and there is rarely a reason to choose them when the container supports the real thing.
Why convert M4V to another video format?

Does M4V conversion re-encode the video?
